Read the evidence and its limits.

Ask who was studied, what changed, and what those results can tell you about your own goal.

Within the HIV study group

Keep the trial group in view.

As of September 2026, US approval covers tesamorelin (EGRIFTA SV, EGRIFTA WR) for reducing excess belly fat in adults with HIV who also have lipodystrophy.

HIV is a virus that weakens the body’s ability to fight infections.

Lipodystrophy means changes in how the body stores fat that can occur with HIV treatment.

As of September 2026, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the US drug regulator, has not approved tesamorelin for weight loss.

The medicine’s label is its official information about uses and cautions.

Read the scope of approval
The main study

Deep belly fat fell. Body weight barely changed.

In a study published in 2007, researcher Falutz and his team followed 412 adults who had HIV and extra belly fat.

Deep belly fat means fat around the organs inside the belly.

Placebo means a dummy treatment without the active study medicine.

In that paper, deep belly fat fell about 15% with tesamorelin and rose about 5% with placebo over 26 weeks.

The label’s main trials showed little change in body weight.

In the later part of the studies, people switched to placebo regained belly fat over the next 26 weeks.

Ask how the findings relate to your concern and which changes would count as useful progress for you.

The limit to keep

Check the evidence for your own goal.

As of September 2026, tesamorelin has no FDA approval for memory problems or ageing.

If that is your goal, ask which study fits you, what it measured, and what remains unknown.

Open the studies on thinking tests

Research on a different use is not proof of FDA approval for that use.

What the label flags

Bring these cautions into the visit.

The cautions below are in the official medicine information available in September 2026.

Blood sugar

The label warns that tesamorelin can raise blood sugar.

Fluid build-up

The label links fluid build-up to swelling, sore joints, and hand tingling from a squeezed nerve in the wrist.

A body signal can rise too high

IGF-1 is a body signal that helps cells grow; the label says the effects of high levels over a long time are unknown.

The label says doctors need to test IGF-1 during treatment and consider stopping treatment if it stays too high.

Ask what tests you need and what results would change your treatment.

Heart and blood vessels

The label says it is not known whether long-term use is safe for the heart and blood vessels.

Plain words

Find a term you just read.

Read the meanings below. If a search box is shown, type a word such as “blood” to show matching meanings. Use “Clear” to show the full list again.

Peptide
Protein building blocks linked in a chain.
FDA approval
Permission for a specific medicine and a named use.
Lipodystrophy
A change in where fat is stored, which can come with HIV treatment.
Telehealth
A health visit by video, phone, or online messages.
Compounding
Preparing medicine for an order in place of supplying a ready-made product.
Biologic
For tesamorelin, this means a medicine made from a long chain of protein building blocks. US law bars pharmacies from making their own copies of it, as of September 2026.
Placebo
A dummy treatment without the active medicine being studied.
Blood sugar
Glucose is the medical word for blood sugar.
Growth hormone
A body signal that helps build body tissue and break down fat.
IGF-1
A body signal that helps cells grow. Tesamorelin makes the body release more growth hormone, which raises this signal.
